Watchful Mama

This beauty was walking near the roadside with her calf. He's not visible here, but in future pictures I'll be sure to show off his cuteness. We we driving along in the evening when I noticed a shape on the top of the hill. I was thinking "That must be another moose!"

I never thought I would be lucky enough to see a mama and her baby. For safety we kept extra distance. Mother moose are very protective and will charge at anything they see as a threat to their young. Moose often give birth to twins, but calves have at best a 70% chance to survive to their first year. The older they get, the better their outlook is.
